Choose Wi-Fi 7 by the bottleneck you actually need to remove.

A Wi-Fi 7 badge can bundle together 6 GHz, 320 MHz channels, Multi-Link Operation, multi-gig Ethernet, mesh support and very large advertised aggregate rates. Those features solve different problems. This guide turns them into a bounded decision path using current U.S. regulatory and manufacturer evidence, without pretending that a specification sheet predicts throughput in your home.

01 · BOUNDED DECISION AID

Four useful outcomes are better than one “best router.”

Start with the problem. Then verify that the clients, wired network and home layout can use the feature you are paying for.

PATH A · KEEP CURRENT

Your router may not be the bottleneck.

If your current Wi-Fi 6/6E network is stable, your internet plan is below the speed your wired gateway already delivers, and your important clients do not support Wi-Fi 7 features, a new badge may not change the workload that matters. Confirm client capabilities and the actual weak point before replacing working equipment.

PATH B · SINGLE ROUTER

Choose Wi-Fi 7 when compatible clients and wired ports line up.

A single-router upgrade is most defensible when coverage is already adequate but newer phones/laptops can use Wi-Fi 7, the router exposes the bands you need, and its WAN/LAN ports do not create an obvious wired bottleneck. Treat 6 GHz as an additional short-range/high-capacity option, not as a magic whole-home coverage layer.

PATH C · MESH

Use mesh to solve placement and backhaul problems.

For multi-floor or difficult layouts, the more important question may be how nodes connect. TP-Link's Deco BE11000 documents both wired and wireless backhaul plus four 2.5 Gbps ports per unit. That is evidence for connection options, not a guarantee of any particular room speed or coverage radius.

PATH D · WIRED-FIRST

Multi-gig Ethernet can matter more than the headline wireless total.

If a NAS, workstation, media server or multi-gig internet service is the real workload, read WAN and LAN port rates before the aggregate Wi-Fi label. The Archer BE550, for example, documents one 2.5 Gbps WAN and four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports. A faster wireless link still cannot make a slower wired path disappear.

02 · 6 GHZ

6 GHz is spectrum, not a universal range upgrade.

The FCC opened the 5.925–7.125 GHz band for new unlicensed uses in the United States, with different operating categories and power rules.

REGULATORY CONTEXT

The U.S. 6 GHz framework enables wider channels but keeps operating rules attached.

FCC 20-51 made 1,200 MHz of 6 GHz spectrum available for unlicensed use. The order distinguishes low-power indoor devices from standard-power operation that uses an Automated Frequency Coordination system. This matters because “supports 6 GHz” does not mean every device operates at the same power, under the same conditions, or in the same regulatory mode.

For a home buyer, the practical takeaway is narrower: verify that both the router and the client support the relevant 6 GHz/Wi-Fi generation in your market. Do not import a channel or power assumption from another country, and do not treat 6 GHz as a replacement for thoughtful access-point placement.

2.4 GHz
Often retained for compatibility and reach; a Wi-Fi 7 system may still use an older-generation radio mode on this band.
5 GHz
Remains central for many current clients and can be a strong practical band even in a Wi-Fi 7 network.
6 GHz
Adds cleaner spectrum and room for wider channels where the router, client and regional rules support them.
Research rule
Record the exact band and regulatory market rather than reducing the product to a single “Wi-Fi 7 speed.”

03 · 320 MHZ + MLO

Feature support must exist on both ends of the link.

A router advertising a Wi-Fi 7 feature does not make an older client use it.

320 MHZ

Wider channel support belongs to the 6 GHz path in these worked examples.

TP-Link's U.S. Wi-Fi 7 material exposes 320 MHz as a Wi-Fi 7 capability and explicitly warns that availability can depend on the client and regional regulatory restrictions. Read it as a capability with prerequisites, not a permanently available real-world width.

MULTI-LINK OPERATION

MLO needs compatible endpoints.

TP-Link describes MLO as sending and receiving across multiple links/bands to improve throughput, latency or reliability. Those benefits require compatible client support and implementation. A Wi-Fi 6 phone does not become an MLO client because the router supports it.

AGGREGATE RATE

BE9300 or BE11000 labels are not internet-speed promises.

Manufacturers add theoretical link rates across bands when describing a product class. TP-Link also states that actual throughput, coverage and connected-device performance vary with client limits, obstacles, traffic and environment. Compare band-by-band capability and wired interfaces instead of treating the model number as a speed test result.

04 · WIRED BOTTLENECKS

Read the Ethernet diagram before the wireless headline.

WAN, LAN and backhaul are separate paths. The slowest required path can cap the workload that matters.

WAN

Match the internet handoff.

If the router has a 2.5 Gbps WAN port, that is a different internet-facing ceiling than a design with 10 Gbps WAN capability. Your modem/ONT and service plan also have to support the rate. Lohabook does not infer a benefit merely from a larger port label.

LAN

Count the ports your wired devices actually need.

The Archer BE550 documents five 2.5G Ethernet ports total—one WAN and four LAN—while TP-Link's current router lineup also includes higher-tier models with 10G interfaces. The useful comparison is the actual port map for your devices, not “more expensive means faster everywhere.”

BACKHAUL

Mesh-node communication deserves its own row.

Deco BE11000 documents optional Ethernet backhaul and a combined wired/wireless backhaul mode. In a home where walls or floors make wireless node-to-node links difficult, an existing Ethernet run can be more important than a larger theoretical Wi-Fi total.

CABLES + NICs

The router is only one endpoint.

A multi-gig port does not upgrade the cable, switch, network adapter, modem or server attached to it. Confirm every required link in the path before attributing a bottleneck to Wi-Fi.

05 · MESH OR ONE ROUTER?

Coverage decisions are geometry decisions before they are model decisions.

No manufacturer square-foot figure can reproduce your walls, floors, interference, node placement and client radios.

PLACEMENT FIRST

Use a mesh system when the home needs multiple well-placed radios, not just because mesh is newer.

A compact home with a central router location may be better served by one capable access point than by multiple poorly placed nodes. A long, multi-level or dense-material home may benefit from multiple nodes, especially when Ethernet backhaul is available. The correct question is whether a second radio location fixes a coverage or capacity problem that one router cannot.

When comparing mesh products, keep node count, port layout, supported backhaul modes and client compatibility separate. Do not assume a three-pack is automatically better than a two-pack, or that every node needs to be active in a smaller home.

One-router signal
Test the locations and devices that matter before replacing equipment.
Node placement
Place nodes where they can still communicate strongly with the network, not only inside the final dead zone.
Wired backhaul
Useful when existing Ethernet can remove a difficult wireless node-to-node hop.
Roaming
Client behavior also matters; a mesh label does not guarantee every device roams at the same threshold.

06 · OWNERSHIP CHECK

Support and firmware are part of a router's useful life.

Networking gear is infrastructure. Treat update/support evidence as part of the purchase research.

HARDWARE VERSION

Verify the exact regional revision.

TP-Link's Archer BE800 support page separates hardware versions and warns that model/hardware availability varies by region. Manuals, firmware and support instructions can therefore depend on more than the family name printed on the box.

UPDATES

Look for the current support/download surface.

A product page explains capabilities; the support page shows the manuals, firmware and hardware-version structure you may rely on later. Lohabook links both rather than treating launch marketing as the complete ownership reference.

SECURITY FEATURES

Separate included controls from paid services.

Manufacturer security suites can combine baseline router controls with optional subscription features. Verify the current plan and feature terms before assuming a named security feature remains free for the full ownership period.
