A TV can say “120 Hz” and still miss the gaming mode you actually need.

For console gaming, the useful question is not whether a TV carries a modern HDMI badge. The whole signal path has to line up: console output, selected HDMI port, cable, resolution, refresh rate, Variable Refresh Rate, Auto Low Latency Mode, HDR mode, TV firmware and the game itself. This guide turns those separate checks into a bounded compatibility worksheet.

01 · BOUNDED DECISION AID

Four outcomes are more useful than a generic “HDMI 2.1 TV” label.

Start from the console and display mode you actually use, then verify the exact port and cable path.

PATH A · 4K60 IS ENOUGH

Do not replace a working TV only to collect unused feature badges.

If your games, viewing distance and console use are already satisfactory at 4K/60 Hz, and you do not need VRR or 120 Hz output, a newer feature list may not solve a real problem. Confirm your current TV's firmware, game mode and HDMI setup before assuming hardware replacement is required.

PATH B · TARGET 4K120

Verify the exact 4K/120 signal path, not just panel refresh.

A television can have a 120 Hz panel while only some inputs support the bandwidth or feature set needed for 4K/120 from a console. Check the TV manual for the exact HDMI input, enhanced-input setting if required, supported resolution/refresh combinations and the cable specification.

PATH C · TARGET VRR

Variable Refresh Rate is a separate capability from 120 Hz.

HDMI defines VRR as a gaming feature that lets the source vary frame delivery timing instead of forcing a static refresh cadence. PlayStation and Xbox both document VRR as a display-dependent capability. A 120 Hz input does not automatically prove VRR support or the same VRR behavior across every mode.

PATH D · FIX THE CHAIN FIRST

If the mode disappears, troubleshoot port, cable, settings and firmware before blaming the panel.

Xbox specifically advises checking that the console is connected to the correct HDMI port and that TV firmware is current. PlayStation exposes separate settings for 120 Hz output, VRR, ALLM and video-transfer behavior. A missing mode can therefore be a configuration or signal-path issue rather than a failed television.

02 · 120 HZ IS NOT 120 FPS

Refresh capability and game frame rate describe different parts of the experience.

A display can accept a 120 Hz signal while a game renders at a lower or varying frame rate. Conversely, a game can offer a high-frame-rate mode that the selected TV input cannot accept at the chosen resolution.

DISPLAY INPUT

120 Hz output must be supported by the TV and the selected mode.

PlayStation's current PS5 guidance says the 120 Hz Output setting enables 120 Hz video for TVs and games that support it, and advises disabling it if a display has output problems. Treat that as a compatibility condition, not a promise that every title runs at 120 frames per second.

GAME OUTPUT

The game decides its render mode.

Resolution, graphics settings and performance targets are game-specific. Lohabook does not infer a title's frame rate from the TV specification. Verify the game's own settings or publisher documentation when a particular 120 fps mode matters.

PORT-SPECIFIC SUPPORT

The right HDMI input can matter.

Xbox's first-party setup guidance warns that some televisions expose advanced HDMI capability on only selected ports and tells owners to consult the TV manual. Record the exact input number you intend to use instead of writing “HDMI 2.1” once and assuming every socket is equivalent.

03 · VRR

Use VRR to describe timing behavior, not as a universal smoothness score.

Variable Refresh Rate can reduce visible tearing or judder when frame delivery varies, but the useful operating range and game/display behavior remain implementation-specific.

HDMI DEFINITION

VRR lets the gaming source vary refresh timing as frames become ready.

HDMI Licensing describes VRR as allowing a gaming source to deliver frames as soon as they are available rather than at a fixed cadence. That explains the feature's purpose without turning it into a claim about a specific TV's VRR range, flicker behavior or image quality.

PLAYSTATION

PS5 treats VRR as a TV-and-game compatibility setting.

PlayStation says results vary depending on the TV and provides a separate “Apply to Unsupported Games” option that may need to be disabled if behavior becomes unexpected. This is a useful reminder that VRR support is not a one-bit quality score.

XBOX

Xbox Series X|S also exposes VRR as part of the advanced display path.

Xbox's setup guidance groups VRR with 120 Hz and ALLM and recommends keeping display firmware current. When researching a television, preserve the exact supported input/mode and firmware context instead of copying a generic console-compatibility badge.

RESEARCH RULE

Write down the resolution + refresh + VRR combination you need.

“VRR supported” is less useful than “VRR is documented on the HDMI input I will use at the resolution and refresh mode I need.” If the manufacturer manual does not document the combination, do not infer it from another model or retailer listing.

04 · ALLM + GAME MODE

Automatic Low Latency Mode is a switching signal, not a measured latency result.

ALLM can tell a compatible display to enter its low-latency mode when gaming starts, but it does not publish the television's input-lag measurement.

WHAT ALLM DOES

The source can ask the display to switch to a low-latency mode.

HDMI Licensing defines ALLM as a feature that lets a source signal the display to switch automatically to a low-latency mode and then return when that mode is no longer required. This is a control behavior, not a performance benchmark.

PlayStation notes that on a compatible TV, ALLM can switch automatically while playing games and that VRR use can affect ALLM behavior. Xbox likewise treats ALLM as part of its advanced display feature set. Lohabook therefore records ALLM support separately from any third-party input-lag measurement.

05 · HDR + COLOR PATH

HDR compatibility is another independent layer.

High refresh, VRR and HDR can interact through the available link mode, but one feature does not automatically guarantee the others.

PS5 HDR

PS5 exposes HDR as its own video-output setting.

PlayStation documents separate HDR, Deep Colour and RGB Range controls alongside VRR and 120 Hz. If the image path changes when high-refresh output is enabled, verify the console's video information and the TV's supported input mode before concluding that HDR is universally broken.

FORMAT ≠ QUALITY

An HDR logo does not describe peak brightness, tone mapping or black level.

Those are separate panel and processing characteristics that require their own evidence. This guide intentionally does not rank OLED, QD-OLED, Mini-LED or LCD technologies because the HDMI compatibility question can be answered without fabricating picture-quality scores.

COLOR OUTPUT

Color format can change with bandwidth and output settings.

PlayStation's support guidance documents that changing video-transfer settings can limit some high-bandwidth modes and change color output. That is why a troubleshooting worksheet should preserve the exact console setting rather than recording only “4K HDR.”

CHECK INFO

Use the console's current output/status screen as evidence.

Before buying a new cable or TV, capture the console's reported resolution, refresh capability, VRR availability and HDR status while connected to the exact input you use. This creates a reproducible compatibility record without collecting private account information.

06 · CABLE + INPUT CHECKLIST

Connector shape alone does not prove the full mode.

Use a console-supplied cable only when its documented specification matches the exact resolution and refresh mode you need; otherwise use another cable whose specification is explicitly appropriate for that mode. Then verify the television's exact input requirements.

CABLE

Match the cable specification to the intended high-bandwidth mode.

HDMI Licensing maintains the Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable program among the feature set associated with modern high-bandwidth HDMI operation. Avoid an unlabeled “8K cable” marketing claim; use a cable whose documented or certified specification matches the requested mode, whether it came with the console or was obtained separately.

INPUT

Check which physical port supports the required mode.

Some televisions require a specific port or an “enhanced” input setting for advanced modes. Xbox explicitly tells users to consult the television manual because not every input necessarily exposes the same capability. Do that before assuming the cable is defective.

CHAIN

AV receivers, soundbars and switches can become the bottleneck.

If the console does not connect directly to the TV, every intermediate device must support the required video path. A receiver or switch that negotiates a lower mode can prevent 4K/120 or VRR even when the console and television support it independently.

07 · FIVE-FIELD COMPATIBILITY RECORD

Keep one small evidence record instead of a pile of badges.

This is the minimum useful worksheet for comparing televisions or diagnosing an existing setup.

1 · SOURCE

Console + exact model.

Record the exact console model and the output mode you care about: for example, 4K/60, 4K/120, VRR, HDR or a combination.

2 · TV INPUT

TV model + exact HDMI port.

Keep the official manual or support URL beside the input number so a future firmware or configuration check has a primary source.

3 · CABLE/CHAIN

Direct cable or every intermediate device.

Record whether the console connects directly to the television or passes through a receiver, soundbar, switch or capture device.

4 · SETTINGS

120 Hz, VRR, ALLM, HDR and enhanced-input state.

Keep these as separate booleans or modes. A single “gaming mode supported” field hides the exact reason a configuration works or fails.

5 · VERIFIED DATE

Record when the manual/firmware claim was checked.

Firmware can add, remove or change behavior. A verification date keeps an old compatibility note from masquerading as current support.
