A thermostat is compatible with an HVAC control system—not with a wall opening.

Start with the exact heating/cooling equipment, control voltage, stages, heat-pump/AUX behavior, zones and existing thermostat wiring. Only then compare app features, sensors or smart-home integrations. This keeps a cheap-looking thermostat swap from becoming an unsafe or unsupported control-system change.

Four bounded paths

Choose the simplest path supported by the exact equipment documentation. If system voltage, wiring identity or control topology is unclear, stop the product comparison and use a qualified HVAC/electrical professional.

1 · Keep the current thermostat

Choose this when the existing control already schedules reliably and remote control, occupancy automation or energy feedback would not solve a meaningful problem.

2 · Conventional 24V smart thermostat

Choose this only when the manufacturer compatibility tool explicitly supports the exact system type, stage count, heat-pump/AUX arrangement, accessory wiring and power method.

3 · Equipment-vendor controller

Choose this research path for communicating, variable-capacity or otherwise proprietary HVAC where a generic thermostat could remove equipment-specific control behavior. Verify the HVAC maker’s own controller documentation.

4 · Stop and get qualified help

Use this path for line-voltage/thick-wire controls, unknown terminals, multiple transformers, complex zoning, unclear heat-pump/AUX wiring or any condition the compatibility checker does not explicitly resolve.

WHAT THE PRIMARY SOURCES SUPPORT

Three useful facts that prevent bad comparisons

ENERGY STAR is field-data based

EPA says certified smart thermostats are evaluated using actual field data for heating/cooling runtime savings rather than a simple lab wattage claim. The program also requires scheduling, energy-use feedback and basic local thermostat operation when service-provider connectivity is absent. Treat certification as standardized evidence—not a promise of your household’s exact bill savings.

Nest compatibility is model-specific

Google’s current compatibility table distinguishes among Nest generations and configurations. Some system types require a C wire or Nest Power Connector on one model but not another. Always use the exact thermostat generation and exact HVAC wiring/system in the compatibility workflow.

ecobee exposes an exact checker

ecobee’s official compatibility checker asks for the existing system/wiring before declaring fit. Use that result and the exact product documentation instead of translating a generic “works with most homes” statement into a guarantee for a particular HVAC system.
