Buy the cleaning workflow, not the navigation buzzword.

Robot vacuums now mix floor maps, app accounts, cloud services, LiDAR or camera-based sensing, mop hardware and increasingly elaborate docks. The useful question is not which robot has the longest feature list. It is which documented system fits your floors, obstacles, privacy expectations and maintenance routine.

Four useful outcomes before you compare models

Keep the simpler cleaner

If scheduled whole-floor cleaning already works and you do not need room targeting, no-go zones or app-driven map editing, a mapping upgrade may add complexity without solving a real household problem.

Choose map-first control

Prioritize a model whose official manual documents the room, zone, no-go and multi-floor controls you actually expect to use. Verify whether those features depend on a cloud account or app before purchase.

Choose obstacle-aware automation carefully

If cords, shoes, toys or pet-related obstacles are common, inspect the exact model’s documented sensing stack and privacy controls. Do not assume “AI,” a camera, LiDAR or any other sensor guarantees reliable avoidance.

Prioritize the ownership workflow

If the real goal is less hands-on upkeep, compare dock footprint, dust handling, water-tank or plumbing requirements where applicable, consumables, cleaning steps, firmware support and official parts/support paths.

1. Separate navigation from obstacle avoidance

Navigation answers a broad question: how does the robot understand where it has been and where it should go next? Obstacle avoidance answers a different one: what happens when the robot encounters a cable, shoe, toy, low furniture edge or another object during a run? A product can be strong at repeatable room mapping without being equally strong at recognizing small floor hazards.

Do not infer performance from a sensor name alone. LiDAR can support spatial mapping without proving how a robot handles cords. A camera can support object-recognition features without proving that every object will be detected. Manufacturer demonstrations are useful for understanding intended features, but they are not a substitute for the exact manual, supported-object list, firmware notes and your own tolerance for preparing the floor before cleaning.

2. Decide whether maps are optional or central to your routine

Room labels, targeted room cleaning, zones, keep-out areas and multi-floor maps can turn a robot into a reusable household tool instead of a wandering appliance. They can also introduce account, app and data dependencies. iRobot’s official Smart Maps privacy documentation is a concrete example: it says its Smart Maps are stored in the cloud, that map-report data is sent to iRobot Cloud for processing, and that disabling mapping features also disables map-dependent functions such as directed room cleaning, targeted zones and keep-out zones.

That does not mean every robot vacuum uses the same architecture. Roborock’s current Trust Center explicitly says practices can vary by product model and directs users to the product manual and app for model-specific collection details. Treat that as the correct research habit: verify the exact model, market, app and privacy policy instead of transferring one brand’s behavior to another.

Privacy question to ask before checkout

Which features still work if you decline cloud mapping, remote viewing, voice-assistant integration or optional analytics? If the official documentation does not answer that clearly, treat the dependency as unresolved rather than guessing.

3. Inspect the app and account lifecycle, not just the first setup

Think past onboarding. If a map is important, find out what happens when you replace the phone, change the home Wi-Fi network, transfer the robot to another account, factory-reset it or sell it. iRobot, for example, documents that uninstalling its app does not remove cloud-stored Smart Maps, while a factory reset or new robot requires creating a new map. Other brands can behave differently.

Before resale or disposal, use the manufacturer’s current reset/account-removal instructions rather than assuming a physical power cycle removes household data. If remote camera or video features exist on the exact model, verify how access is authenticated and how those features can be disabled. Roborock’s Trust Center describes security controls for some video-capable products, but also warns that actual practices vary by model.

4. Measure the dock as part of the appliance

A self-emptying or wash-capable base can be larger and more operationally important than the robot itself. Measure width, depth, height clearance and the space needed to remove bags, tanks, trays or filters. If a model offers water refill/drain plumbing, verify the official installation requirements for that exact dock; do not assume a plumbed option exists or that it fits a particular room.

A small apartment may benefit more from a compact charging base and simple manual bin emptying than from a large automation dock. A larger household may value less frequent dust-bin handling. Neither is universally better—the right choice depends on floor area, storage space, cleaning frequency and how much dock maintenance you are willing to perform.

5. Treat “vacuum + mop” as a floor-care compatibility question

Check whether the manufacturer documents mop lifting, mop removal, carpet avoidance, separate no-mop zones or another method for mixed hard-floor and carpet homes. Do not assume a robot can safely cross every rug while wet. Also verify which detergents, if any, the manufacturer permits. Using an unapproved chemical can create material, residue or warranty questions that generic shopping advice cannot resolve.

For households with delicate flooring, confirm the flooring maker’s care guidance too. A robot-vacuum feature list does not override the floor manufacturer’s cleaning restrictions.

6. Budget for consumables without inventing a yearly cost

Brushes, side brushes, filters, dust bags, mop pads and dock-cleaning parts wear differently depending on floor material, hair, debris and cleaning frequency. Lohabook does not estimate a universal annual consumables bill. Instead, use the exact model’s official maintenance schedule and parts catalogue to identify what is replaceable, how often inspection or cleaning is recommended, and whether the manufacturer still sells the required parts in your market.

Also inspect how hair is removed from rollers, how filters are cleaned or replaced, how mop hardware is washed, and how dirty-water paths are maintained. A feature that saves five minutes during a cleaning run can be a poor fit if its maintenance routine is incompatible with the household.

7. Firmware and support are part of the ownership decision

Mapping, object handling and app behavior can change after launch. Keep the exact model number and hardware revision where the manufacturer distinguishes them. Check the official support center for manuals, firmware notes, reset instructions, parts and contact paths. Do not treat an old retailer listing as the source of truth for current app compatibility or supported features.
