HEADPHONE RESEARCH GUIDE

“30 hours” and “Bluetooth 5.3” do not describe one fixed listening experience.

Noise-cancelling headphone pages often place ANC, codecs, battery life, microphones, multipoint and price side by side as if one number can summarize the product. A useful comparison keeps every claim attached to the exact mode, device, connection and test basis.

01 · PHYSICAL BASIS

Start with what is actually on the head.

Comfort, seal and physical connection affect the experience before any software setting does. A specification table can establish dimensions and mechanisms; it cannot guarantee comfort for every head, glasses frame or listening session.

FORM

Closed, over-ear design.

Sony lists WH-1000XM6 as a closed over-ear headphone. The current specification gives an approximate weight of 8.96 oz and a 1.18-inch driver. Those numbers are useful orientation, not proof that clamping pressure, pad seal or long-session comfort will suit every listener.

WIRED PATH

A 3.5 mm input and passive operation exist alongside Bluetooth.

The specification lists a detachable stereo mini cable and passive operation. That matters when a source device has an analog output or when wireless use is undesirable. Wired operation should still be researched as its own state; Bluetooth codecs, app controls and wireless features do not automatically remain identical merely because the same headphone is on your head.

FIT

Seal affects both bass perception and noise control.

Head shape, hair, glasses and pad placement can change acoustic seal. Adaptive processing may respond to wearing conditions, but it does not erase fit differences. A useful comparison therefore avoids treating one reviewer’s ANC or tonal result as a universal physical constant.

02 · NOISE CONTROL

Noise cancelling and ambient sound solve opposite problems.

Active noise cancelling tries to reduce external sound; ambient modes intentionally let more surroundings through. Both depend on microphones, processing, fit and environment, so a single “ANC” badge says little about how a commute, office or flight will feel.

ANC

Sony lists Adaptive NC Optimizer.

WH-1000XM6 supports active noise cancelling with an adaptive optimizer. That is a feature description, not a Lohabook ranking. Low-frequency engine rumble, voices, wind, sudden sounds and seal leakage are different acoustic problems; performance can vary across them.

AMBIENT

Ambient Sound and automatic ambient behavior are separate listening modes.

Sony lists Ambient Sound plus automatic ambient behavior and Quick Attention. These are useful when awareness is desired, but they should not be treated as a substitute for situational judgment around traffic, machinery or other hazards.

HEARING BOUNDARY

ANC is not medical hearing protection.

Noise cancelling can reduce perceived environmental noise, but Lohabook does not present it as treatment for tinnitus or hearing loss, and does not claim it replaces certified hearing protection in hazardous-noise environments. Listening level and exposure time still matter.

03 · BATTERY

Always read the mode attached to the runtime.

Sony publishes multiple battery figures for the same headphone. That is a useful reminder that “battery life” is not one universal number.

SONY'S PUBLISHED MAXIMA

30 hours with noise cancelling on; 40 hours with noise cancelling off.

The current Sony specification lists maximum continuous music playback of 30 hours with NC on and 40 hours with NC off. It separately lists maximum continuous communication time of 24 hours with NC on and 28 hours with NC off, plus an approximate 3.5-hour charge time.

Those are mode-specific maximums. Volume, codec, call use, processing, temperature, battery age, wireless conditions and feature settings can move real runtime. Do not compare Sony’s NC-off music maximum with another product’s NC-on calling result.

04 · CODECS & BLUETOOTH

A codec in the spec sheet is a capability, not a promise that every link uses it.

Bluetooth audio is negotiated between the headphone, source device, operating system, application and sometimes user settings. The supported list sets the ceiling; the active connection determines what you actually hear.

SUPPORTED FORMATS

SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 are listed.

Sony currently lists all four on WH-1000XM6. That does not mean an iPhone, Android phone, laptop and television will all negotiate the same codec. Check the source device and software path before attributing a quality or latency result to the headphone alone.

BLUETOOTH

Version 5.3 does not define the active codec by itself.

The specification lists Bluetooth 5.3. A version number describes supported Bluetooth capabilities; it is not shorthand for LDAC, LC3, lossless audio, a fixed latency number or a guaranteed range in every radio environment.

MULTIPOINT

Multipoint is useful only if the switching behavior fits your devices.

Sony lists multipoint connection. That helps a phone-and-laptop workflow, but device interoperability, application behavior and call routing can still vary. Test the actual devices that matter rather than treating “multipoint” as a complete workflow description.

WIRED COMPARISON

Do not use Bluetooth codec language to describe the analog cable path.

A 3.5 mm cable and a Bluetooth stream are different signal paths. Passive versus powered wired use can also change the role of internal processing. Keep those states explicit whenever sound, latency or battery behavior is compared.

05 · CALLS & MICROPHONES

Microphone count does not equal call quality in every room.

Manufacturers can describe microphone arrays and processing, but intelligibility still depends on wind, competing voices, room reverberation, network conditions, application processing and the listener at the far end.

MICROPHONE SYSTEM

Sony uses an adaptive microphone system with internal processing.

The product material emphasizes microphone processing for voice pickup and noise control. Treat that as the vendor’s implementation description. A controlled marketing demo is not a guarantee for a train platform, open-plan office or weak mobile-data call.

COMMUNICATION BATTERY

Call-mode runtime has its own published basis.

The separate 24/28-hour communication figures are another reason not to reuse the 30/40-hour music figures in a calling workflow. If meetings are the primary use, compare against the communication basis and then test the actual conferencing stack.

APP & FIRMWARE

Settings and firmware can change behavior after purchase.

Adaptive sound, spatial features, assistant options and connection settings may depend on Sony’s companion software and current firmware. Record software state when reproducing a test instead of assuming the launch-day behavior is permanent.

06 · PRICE BASIS

Separate a promotion from MSRP before recording a “price.”

Headphone prices move frequently. A temporary direct-sale observation should not overwrite the regular manufacturer reference price without preserving both bases and the review date.

U.S. WORKED EXAMPLE

Sony currently shows $398 direct against a $459.99 MSRP reference.

On August 24, 2026, Sony’s U.S. store shows WH-1000XM6 at $398 for the observed color pages while displaying $459.99 as the crossed-out MSRP/reference amount. Lohabook records that only as dated direct-price context. It is a promotion, not a declaration that $398 is the permanent starting price.

Financing, trade-in, group discounts, loyalty points, bundles, marketplace listings and future promotions are separate evidence bases. They should not be mixed into the regular reference price or used to claim one market is cheaper without like-for-like configuration and cost treatment.

RESEARCH CHECKLIST

Twelve questions before a headphone comparison is trustworthy.

  1. Is the product truly over-ear, on-ear or in-ear, and how does seal affect the result?
  2. Was the battery figure measured with noise cancelling on or off?
  3. Is the runtime music playback, communication time or a mixed-use estimate?
  4. Which Bluetooth codec is actually active on the source device?
  5. Does the source support LDAC or LC3, or only another listed format?
  6. Is multipoint enabled, and does it behave correctly with the two devices that matter?
  7. Is the comparison wireless, powered-wired or passive-wired?
  8. Are call tests being performed in comparable noise, wind and network conditions?
  9. Which app settings and firmware version were active?
  10. Is a promotional direct price being confused with MSRP or a permanent regular price?
  11. Are vendor superlatives being repeated as editorial conclusions?
  12. Is ANC being incorrectly treated as certified hearing protection or medical treatment?

EDITORIAL BOUNDARY

A headphone specification is evidence, not a ranking.

Lohabook does not declare WH-1000XM6 the winner of a headphone category, does not recommend it automatically from one ANC or battery claim, and does not provide an affiliate checkout path. The purpose of the worked example is to show how to preserve mode, source, device compatibility and price context.
