MIRRORLESS CAMERA RESEARCH GUIDE

“26 megapixels” and “4K 120p” do not describe one complete camera.

A useful mirrorless-camera comparison keeps sensor format, lens mount, autofocus, stabilization, recording mode, card speed, battery test basis and price configuration attached to the conditions that make each claim true. The Sony α6700 is a useful worked example because Sony publishes unusually detailed mode-by-mode specifications.

01 · SENSOR & LENS SYSTEM

Start with format and mount before counting pixels.

A camera body is part of a system. Sensor dimensions affect field of view, lens behavior, depth-of-field choices and readout characteristics; the lens mount determines the lenses and adapters that can actually be used.

SENSOR

APS-C Exmor R CMOS · about 26.0MP effective for stills.

Sony’s detailed specification lists a 23.3 × 15.5 mm APS-C Exmor R CMOS sensor and approximately 26.0 effective megapixels for still images. Megapixel count is one sampling dimension, not a direct ranking of dynamic range, noise, color, autofocus or lens quality.

MOUNT

Sony E-mount defines the native lens ecosystem.

The α6700 uses Sony E-mount. A body-only price is therefore not the complete cost of a working camera unless the photographer already owns a suitable lens. Compare lens availability, focal length, aperture, autofocus behavior, stabilization and size alongside the body.

CROP CONTEXT

Field of view depends on sensor size and focal length.

An APS-C camera uses the same focal-length units printed on the lens, but the angle of view differs from a 35 mm full-frame body. Keep actual focal length, equivalent field-of-view shorthand and digital/crop modes separate instead of treating them as interchangeable optical facts.

02 · AUTOFOCUS

AF-point count is a capability description, not a winner score.

Sony publishes different maximum phase-detection point counts for stills and movies. Those counts describe the implemented focus system; they do not guarantee that every subject, lens, light level or motion pattern will focus equally well.

STILLS

Up to 759 phase-detection AF points.

The detailed Sony specification lists a maximum of 759 phase-detection points for still images. Coverage, selected AF area, lens behavior, subject contrast, shutter settings and photographer technique still shape the result.

MOVIES

Up to 495 phase-detection points for video.

Movie autofocus is specified separately. Transition speed, subject-shift sensitivity, recognition mode and recording conditions can matter more to a real sequence than simply comparing the stills AF-point number across brands.

RECOGNITION

AI subject recognition is not guaranteed recognition.

Sony lists recognition targets including human, animal, bird, insect, car, train and airplane. Treat that as supported subject-recognition capability, not a promise that every angle, occlusion, species, vehicle or lighting condition will be identified correctly.

03 · STABILIZATION

A “stops” rating needs its CIPA test basis attached.

In-body stabilization is useful, but a laboratory compensation figure is not a guaranteed handheld shutter speed for every photographer, lens or subject.

SONY SUPPORT SPECIFICATION

Five-axis sensor-shift stabilization; 5.0-stop CIPA compensation basis.

Sony’s detailed support specification lists sensor-shift stabilization with five-axis compensation. Its published compensation effect is 5.0 stops under a specific CIPA basis: pitch/yaw shake, FE 50 mm F1.2 GM lens and long-exposure noise reduction off. Compensation can depend on lens specifications.

Sony’s consumer-facing product material may summarize stabilization differently. For reproducible research, keep the detailed test basis rather than copying a rounded marketing number into a universal claim. Stabilization cannot freeze subject motion and does not remove the need for appropriate shutter speed, support or technique.

04 · VIDEO MODES

“4K 120p” is a mode family, not one universal recording state.

Resolution, frame rate, bit depth, chroma sampling, codec, bitrate, crop, card requirements, heat and available recording time all belong to the same workflow decision.

4K UP TO 60P

Sony supports multiple XAVC 4K paths.

The detailed specification lists 3840×2160 modes across XAVC S, XAVC HS and XAVC S-I families, including 10-bit options. A comparison should state the exact codec and sampling mode instead of writing “4K” as though every file has the same quality, bitrate or editability.

HIGH FRAME RATE

100p / 119.88p 4K modes exist, with workflow trade-offs.

Sony lists 4K 100p and 119.88p in documented XAVC HS modes, including 10-bit variants. Sony’s current product FAQ also notes that 4K 120p uses a crop. High frame rates can change field of view and greatly increase data rate, storage pressure, battery use and thermal load.

10-BIT 4:2:2

Bit depth and chroma sampling matter only inside a complete workflow.

10-bit 4:2:2 modes can preserve more grading latitude than lighter files, but they also affect bitrate, card capacity, editing performance and delivery requirements. Do not call a codec “better” without stating what the production actually needs.

ALL-INTRA VS LONG GOP

Compression structure changes storage and editing trade-offs.

All-Intra can make frame-level editing easier at much higher data rates; Long GOP can reduce file size while increasing decode complexity. Compare the chosen mode, card, computer and storage plan together.

05 · STORAGE & PORTS

A fast video mode is useful only if the recording and transfer path can sustain it.

Card class, slot capability, file bitrate and computer interface are separate constraints. USB-C connector shape alone does not define storage-card performance.

CARD SLOT

One SD slot, UHS-I/II compliant.

Sony lists a single SD memory-card slot with UHS-I/II compatibility. A one-slot design also changes backup/redundancy workflow compared with a dual-slot body, regardless of how fast the card itself is.

USB-C

USB 3.2 5Gbps plus USB Power Delivery support.

The Type-C port supports SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps and USB-PD charging/power. That does not make every cable, charger or computer port equivalent. Verify power capability and data specification separately.

AUDIO & HDMI

Mic, headphone and micro-HDMI ports support a hybrid workflow.

The body includes 3.5 mm microphone and headphone terminals plus a micro-HDMI Type-D output. Connector presence does not guarantee that a chosen rig, recorder, cable or monitoring workflow is mechanically convenient.

06 · BATTERY

Separate still-photo CIPA shots from movie recording time.

A battery figure is meaningful only when its test mode is attached. The same NP-FZ100 battery has different published references for stills, actual movie recording and continuous movie recording.

CIPA REFERENCE

Approx. 550 EVF shots / 570 LCD shots.

Sony’s detailed specification lists approximately 550 still images using the viewfinder and 570 using the LCD monitor under CIPA methodology. It separately lists about 95 minutes EVF / 100 minutes LCD for actual movie recording and about 190 / 185 minutes for continuous movie recording.

Screen brightness, autofocus activity, stabilization, wireless use, recording mode, temperature, lens, review time and battery age can change real endurance. Do not compare one brand’s continuous-video maximum with another camera’s mixed-use stills figure.

07 · BODY & WEATHER

Weather sealing is not waterproofing.

Outdoor durability claims need careful wording. A sealed body can reduce exposure risk without creating a guarantee against water, dust, condensation or damage.

WEIGHT

About 493 g with battery and card.

Sony lists approximately 493 g with battery and memory card, and about 409 g body-only. Add the lens, hood, filter, microphone, cage or support gear before comparing real carry weight.

SEALING

Designed for durability; not guaranteed 100% dust- and moisture-proof.

Sony’s current product material describes sealing and durable construction while explicitly avoiding a 100% dust/moisture guarantee. Lohabook therefore does not label the α6700 waterproof or safe for rain exposure without judgment and protection.

OPERATING RANGE

Published operating temperature is 0–40 °C / 32–104 °F.

This is an operating specification, not a promise that battery, thermal headroom, condensation risk or recording duration stays unchanged across the entire range.

08 · PRICE BASIS

Body-only and kit prices are different products for comparison purposes.

Camera pricing becomes misleading quickly when a body-only configuration is compared with a kit that includes a lens.

U.S. WORKED EXAMPLE

Sony currently lists the α6700 body-only at $1,499.99.

On August 24, 2026, Sony’s U.S. direct store lists ILCE-6700 body only at $1,499.99. Separate pages list lens kits at different prices. Lohabook uses only the body-only amount for this worked example.

Financing, education/healthcare/military discounts, My Sony points, temporary promotions, used pricing, reseller bundles, taxes and future offers are separate evidence bases. They should not silently overwrite a dated manufacturer-direct body price.

RESEARCH CHECKLIST

Fourteen questions before a mirrorless-camera comparison is trustworthy.

  1. What sensor format and actual sensor dimensions are being compared?
  2. Is megapixel count being mistaken for an overall image-quality score?
  3. Which lens mount and exact lens are attached to the result?
  4. Are autofocus point counts for stills or movies, and under what subject conditions?
  5. Is subject-recognition support being mistaken for guaranteed recognition?
  6. What exact CIPA basis sits behind a stabilization “stops” claim?
  7. Which 4K frame rate, codec, bit depth, chroma sampling and bitrate are active?
  8. Does a high-frame-rate video mode change crop or field of view?
  9. Can the selected card sustain the chosen recording mode and capacity needs?
  10. Is the camera using one storage slot or a redundant dual-slot workflow?
  11. Is battery life quoted for stills, actual movie recording or continuous movie recording?
  12. Is weather sealing being incorrectly described as waterproofing?
  13. Is the price body-only, a specific lens kit, or a temporary promotional bundle?
  14. Are manufacturer capabilities being repeated as a “best camera” conclusion?

EDITORIAL BOUNDARY

A camera specification is evidence, not a ranking.

Lohabook does not declare the Sony α6700 the best mirrorless camera, does not rank image quality from megapixels or AF-point count, and does not provide an affiliate checkout path. This worked example exists to show how a researcher can keep camera-body, lens, recording mode, test basis and price evidence attached to the claim they actually support.
