COMPACT-DESKTOP RESEARCH GUIDE

Research the chip, memory, ports and display topology as one configuration.

Mac mini with M4 is a useful worked example because the product family contains M4 and M4 Pro variants that look nearly identical while their Thunderbolt generation, memory ceilings, storage options and display topologies differ. A useful comparison starts with the exact chip and configuration, then follows every port and display claim back to that configuration instead of treating “Mac mini” as one universal specification row.

01 · START WITH THE CHIP

M4 and M4 Pro share a chassis, not one specification sheet.

The fastest way to corrupt a compact-desktop comparison is to merge family-level marketing with chip-specific hardware.

M4 WORKED BASIS

10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine.

Apple lists four performance cores and six efficiency cores in the current M4 Mac mini, together with a 10-core GPU and 120GB/s memory bandwidth. That is the worked configuration here. It is useful evidence for what the M4 version contains, not a guarantee for a particular application benchmark or sustained workload.

M4 PRO IS SEPARATE

Do not borrow Thunderbolt 5 or higher ceilings.

M4 Pro changes several important comparison rows. Apple lists Thunderbolt 5 on M4 Pro while the M4 model uses Thunderbolt 4, and the Pro variant has different memory, storage and display combinations. A family card that simply says “Thunderbolt 5” would therefore be wrong for the M4 worked example.

PERFORMANCE CLAIMS

Chip identity is not a workload guarantee.

Apple markets M4 around CPU, GPU, media and Apple Intelligence capabilities. A research page should keep those features separate from a promise that one render, game, code build or local-AI workload will complete in a fixed time. Thermal state, software version, memory pressure and task shape still matter.

02 · MEMORY & STORAGE

Configuration rows matter more than the family headline.

Memory and storage are not small footnotes on a compact desktop because both affect workload fit and long-term upgrade planning.

UNIFIED MEMORY

Record the exact ordered memory amount.

Apple’s current M4 specification exposes 16GB configurations and higher-memory options depending on the selected model. Do not treat the family’s maximum as the amount included in the starting machine, and do not assume a buyer can add conventional DIMMs later merely because a desktop PC often allows that.

SSD BASIS

256GB and 512GB starting points exist in the M4 table.

Apple’s specification table shows M4 configurations beginning with 256GB or 512GB SSD storage and configurable higher capacities. The useful comparison is the exact SKU or build, not a single “Mac mini storage” figure.

NOMINAL ≠ FREE

Advertised SSD capacity is not guaranteed free space.

Operating-system files, recovery data, apps and formatting consume storage. A 256GB or 512GB label is a hardware capacity basis, not a promise that the same number of gigabytes will appear as immediately free user space after setup.

UPGRADE PLANNING

Choose the configuration from real workload constraints.

Ask whether the machine will hold local photo/video libraries, virtual machines, development toolchains or large caches. That turns the storage row into an actual planning decision instead of a generic “bigger is better” recommendation.

03 · USB-C IS NOT ONE SPEED

The connector shape does not identify the transport.

Mac mini is an unusually clear example of why a comparison should name both connector and protocol.

FRONT USB-C

USB 3 up to 10Gb/s.

The two front USB-C ports on the current Mac mini support USB 3 up to 10Gb/s. They use the same reversible connector shape as the rear Thunderbolt ports, but the published transport capability is different.

REAR THUNDERBOLT 4

Three rear ports support up to 40Gb/s on M4.

Apple lists three Thunderbolt 4 ports on the back of the M4 model, with Thunderbolt 4, USB4 and DisplayPort support up to the stated 40Gb/s interface basis. That does not mean every USB-C cable, hub or SSD will negotiate 40Gb/s.

CABLE & DEVICE LIMITS

The slowest compatible link can set the result.

A storage enclosure, dock, adapter or cable may support a lower generation than the Mac. Record the complete link before attributing a transfer result to the computer. Connector compatibility alone is not throughput evidence.

04 · DISPLAY SUPPORT

“Up to three displays” requires the topology beside it.

Display count changes with resolution, refresh rate and which output path is used. That makes a one-line monitor-count field particularly misleading.

THREE-DISPLAY EXAMPLE

Two 6K60 plus one additional bounded display.

Apple’s M4 specification documents a three-display combination with two displays up to 6K at 60Hz over Thunderbolt plus one display up to 5K60 over Thunderbolt or 4K60 over HDMI. That is a particular topology, not “three 6K displays at any refresh rate.”

HIGH-REFRESH EXAMPLE

One display can reach higher modes under different combinations.

Apple Support separately documents single-display modes up to 8K60, 5K120 or 4K240 for the M4 model, depending on output path and display support. Those maxima should not be copied into a multi-display row without checking the published combination.

HDMI VS THUNDERBOLT

Output path belongs in the evidence row.

HDMI and Thunderbolt can support overlapping but not identical combinations. If an adapter, dock or receiver sits in the path, include it in the compatibility check instead of assuming the Mac’s direct-port maximum survives every intermediary.

NO UNIVERSAL MAXIMUM

Do not promise three monitors at each headline maximum.

The number of connected displays, their resolution and their refresh rates are linked constraints. Apple’s own support page is explicit that maximum display support depends on model, resolution and refresh rate.

05 · NETWORKING

Interface capability is not application throughput.

Network rows should tell you what the computer can connect with, not predict what an ISP, router or remote service will deliver.

WI-FI 6E

Router, spectrum and environment still matter.

Apple lists Wi-Fi 6E on the current Mac mini. Real local throughput and latency still depend on the access point, channel width, spectrum availability, interference, distance and client/router configuration. A Wi-Fi generation label is not an internet-speed guarantee.

ETHERNET

Gigabit standard, 10Gb configurable.

The M4 Mac mini includes Gigabit Ethernet and can be configured with 10Gb Ethernet supporting 1/2.5/5/10Gb link rates. That interface option is valuable evidence for a wired workflow, but it does not promise 10Gb internet or 10Gb end-to-end storage performance.

BLUETOOTH 5.3

Version is not a peripheral-quality verdict.

Apple lists Bluetooth 5.3. Actual keyboard, mouse, controller, audio and accessory behavior depends on the device profile, codec or protocol, firmware, radio conditions and software—not simply the Bluetooth version number.

06 · WHAT IS ACTUALLY IN THE BOX

A desktop price does not automatically include a desktop setup.

Compact desktops often look inexpensive beside laptops because the monitor and input devices may live outside the box price.

CHASSIS

Five inches square and about 1.5 lb for M4.

Apple lists the current chassis at 5.0 × 5.0 × 2.0 inches and approximately 1.5 pounds for the M4 model. That makes physical placement easy to compare, but cable clearance and ventilation still matter in a real desk or rack setup.

INCLUDED

Mac mini and power cord.

Apple’s technical specification lists the Mac mini and a 1.8 m power cord in the box. A monitor, keyboard and pointing device should not be silently added to the included-hardware row.

BUILT-IN AUDIO

A built-in speaker exists, but that is not a workstation-audio verdict.

Apple includes a speaker plus a 3.5 mm headphone jack and HDMI multichannel-audio capability. That evidence does not say the built-in speaker replaces dedicated desktop speakers or studio monitoring.

PORT PLACEMENT

Front convenience and rear infrastructure are different roles.

Two front USB-C ports and the headphone jack are convenient for removable peripherals. HDMI, Ethernet and three Thunderbolt ports live on the rear. Port count is more useful when paired with placement and transport capability.

07 · PRICE EVIDENCE

Keep a family starting price separate from an exact configuration.

Current official pricing should be recorded with enough basis that a future reader can tell what was actually observed.

CURRENT APPLE U.S. FAMILY PRICE$799

Apple’s current U.S. Mac shopping surface lists Mac mini “from $799” as of August 26, 2026. Lohabook treats that as a dated family starting-price observation only because the search/store surface does not expose an unambiguous memory/storage mapping in the same evidence row used here.

DO NOT MIXRefurbished, education, contract and historical prices

Apple refurbished pages, institutional contract PDFs and historical launch pricing can show different numbers and configurations. Those are useful provenance, but they should not be silently substituted for the current new-hardware family starting point.

This guide is a research method, not a purchase recommendation. Lohabook does not rank Mac mini as the best mini PC, and it does not create checkout pressure from Apple’s current store price.

08 · A BETTER COMPARISON WORKFLOW

Turn the configuration into a reproducible evidence row.

A compact-desktop comparison is strongest when another reader can reconstruct the exact configuration and limitations.

STEP 1

Freeze the chip and memory/storage configuration.

Write down M4 versus M4 Pro, installed unified memory, SSD capacity and Ethernet option first. This prevents a later specification from drifting across configurations.

STEP 2

Map each port by transport, not connector.

Record front USB 3 up to 10Gb/s separately from rear Thunderbolt 4/USB4 up to 40Gb/s, plus HDMI and Ethernet. If an accessory needs Thunderbolt, a generic “USB-C available” row is not enough.

STEP 3

Write the display topology you actually need.

List monitor count, resolution, refresh rate and planned output path. Then verify that exact combination against Apple’s display-support matrix rather than assuming every maximum can happen simultaneously.

STEP 4

Price the whole desk, not only the computer.

If the setup needs a display, keyboard, mouse, dock, adapter, 10Gb Ethernet option or larger SSD, keep those separate from the Mac mini family starting price. That produces a realistic research record without turning Lohabook into a cart or configurator.
