HYBRID SUV RESEARCH GUIDE

Keep the trim, drivetrain and EPA rating attached to the same vehicle.

The 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid is a good example of why a model badge is not enough evidence. Sport Hybrid and Sport-L Hybrid can be front-wheel drive or Real Time AWD, TrailSport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid use AWD as standard, and the official EPA numbers change with that configuration. A careful guide keeps those facts together instead of advertising one “CR-V Hybrid MPG” number.

01 · POWERTRAIN IDENTITY

Start with the hybrid system, then identify the exact trim.

Honda lists the hybrid powertrain on Sport Hybrid, TrailSport Hybrid, Sport-L Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid. The 1.5-liter turbocharged LX, EX and EX-L are separate non-hybrid configurations and should not be mixed into the worked example.

HYBRID BASIS

204-hp two-motor hybrid powertrain.

Honda's current U.S. configurator identifies each 2026 hybrid trim with a 204-hp two-motor hybrid system. That total-system figure is the correct worked-example basis; it should not be replaced with the gasoline engine's stand-alone horsepower or a specification from the 1.5-liter turbo trims.

NON-HYBRID IS DIFFERENT

Do not borrow the turbo CR-V's CVT, MPG or engine output.

The non-hybrid LX, EX and EX-L use the 190-hp turbocharged engine and different EPA ratings. A comparison that silently mixes those values with hybrid fuel economy or hybrid system output creates a model-family average that Honda does not publish.

RESEARCH RULE

Write the trim and drivetrain next to every number.

Before recording MPG, price or traction features, write Sport Hybrid 2WD, Sport Hybrid AWD, TrailSport Hybrid AWD, Sport-L Hybrid 2WD/AWD, or Sport Touring Hybrid AWD. That one habit prevents most CR-V Hybrid specification errors.

02 · AWD IS CONFIGURATION

Available AWD is not the same thing as standard AWD.

Honda's configurator says Sport Hybrid and Sport-L Hybrid offer Real Time AWD, while TrailSport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid currently include it as standard equipment.

SPORT HYBRID

Front-wheel drive first, Real Time AWD available.

Sport Hybrid can be researched as a 2WD or AWD vehicle. That matters because the EPA ratings differ. Never quote the 2WD efficiency result while describing an AWD configuration unless the distinction is made explicit.

SPORT-L HYBRID

The same drivetrain choice appears again.

Sport-L Hybrid also offers Real Time AWD. Leather, convenience and trim equipment do not remove the drivetrain choice, so the exact configured vehicle still has to be identified before an MPG or price comparison is defensible.

TRAILSPORT HYBRID

AWD is standard, with all-terrain tires and trim-specific context.

Honda currently lists TrailSport Hybrid with Real Time AWD and all-terrain tires. Those tires and the trim's equipment are part of the vehicle whose EPA result is 38 city / 33 highway / 35 combined. Do not generalize the TrailSport result to the other hybrid trims.

SPORT TOURING HYBRID

AWD is standard here too.

Honda lists Real Time AWD as standard on Sport Touring Hybrid. Its current EPA row belongs with the AWD 40 city / 34 highway / 37 combined context, not the 2WD 43 / 36 / 40 result.

03 · EPA FUEL ECONOMY

Honda's official sources make sense once the trim and drivetrain are kept visible.

Honda's consumer pages expose several fuel-economy headlines. The specification table resolves them into a configuration matrix rather than a contradiction.

2026 EPA MATRIX

Three official hybrid rating contexts.

Honda Information Center currently lists 43 city / 36 highway / 40 combined for 2WD Sport Hybrid and Sport-L Hybrid; 40 city / 34 highway / 37 combined for AWD Sport Hybrid, AWD Sport-L Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid; and 38 city / 33 highway / 35 combined for TrailSport Hybrid AWD.

This explains why Honda's broader vehicle list can advertise a 43/36 hybrid headline while the CR-V performance page discusses a 40/34 hybrid context and the TrailSport page shows 38/33. Those are not values to average. They belong to different configured vehicles.

Sport / Sport-L 2WD
43 city / 36 highway / 40 combined EPA rating.
Sport / Sport-L AWD
40 city / 34 highway / 37 combined EPA rating.
Sport Touring AWD
40 city / 34 highway / 37 combined EPA rating.
TrailSport AWD
38 city / 33 highway / 35 combined EPA rating.
RATING ≠ PERSONAL MPG

EPA values are standardized comparison evidence.

Honda explicitly says real mileage varies with driving and maintenance, conditions, battery-pack age and condition, and other factors. Temperature, speed, elevation, HVAC demand, traffic, tire pressure and payload can all move a real trip away from the window-sticker number.

KEEP THE COLUMNS

City, highway and combined are different measurements.

Do not compare one trim's city figure against another trim's combined figure. A clean research table preserves all three labels and the drivetrain for every row.

NO DIY AVERAGING

Do not calculate one “family MPG” from multiple trims.

Averaging 43/36 with 38/33 creates a number no official test certified. The useful question is which configuration produced which rating and which hardware or trim choices changed along with it.

04 · REAL TIME AWD

Describe the system from Honda's evidence, not from assumptions about AWD.

Honda says Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System can send extra power to the rear wheels when conditions call for additional traction. That does not make it a fixed mechanical torque split or a locking low-range 4WD system.

TRACTION ASSIST

AWD changes how available traction is used.

Honda describes the system as reacting to vehicle conditions and transferring power rearward when needed. That can improve traction, but it does not replace suitable tires, conservative speed or current road-condition judgment.

NOT A GUARANTEE

AWD is not permission to ignore weather or surface limits.

Snow, ice, standing water, mud, grades and tire condition can overwhelm available grip. A research guide should not translate an AWD badge into a promise of safe progress on every road or trail.

TRAILSPORT CONTEXT

All-terrain tires are trim-specific evidence.

TrailSport Hybrid adds 18-inch wheels, all-terrain tires and its own styling/capability package. Those details should remain on the TrailSport row instead of becoming generic CR-V Hybrid equipment.

RESEARCH QUESTION

Ask what changed when AWD was selected.

For Sport Hybrid and Sport-L Hybrid, selecting AWD changes the vehicle behind the MPG figure and can change price. The comparison should capture that configuration change rather than treating AWD as a free floating feature label.

05 · PRICE BASIS

Trim MSRP is evidence; an out-the-door number is a different problem.

Honda's current U.S. configurator provides a clean manufacturer starting point for each hybrid trim. It does not provide one universal transaction price.

CURRENT U.S. TRIM MSRPS

Keep the trim name with the price.

Honda currently lists Sport Hybrid at $35,630, Sport-L Hybrid at $38,725, TrailSport Hybrid at $38,800 and Sport Touring Hybrid at $42,550. Those are manufacturer starting MSRPs for the named trims, reviewed on August 26, 2026.

Lohabook excludes destination/freight, tax, title, registration, premium paint, accessories, dealer transaction pricing, financing, lease offers, trade-in and temporary incentives from this worked basis. If the drivetrain or option package changes, the configured price can change as well.

Sport Hybrid
$35,630 starting MSRP.
Sport-L Hybrid
$38,725 starting MSRP.
TrailSport Hybrid
$38,800 starting MSRP.
Sport Touring Hybrid
$42,550 starting MSRP.

06 · CARGO & PACKAGING

Hybrid packaging can change usable space without changing the model name.

Honda Information Center currently lists the hybrid trims at 36.3 cu ft behind the second row and 71.8 cu ft behind the first row, versus larger figures on the turbo trims. That difference belongs to the powertrain/package row, not a generic CR-V maximum.

HYBRID CARGO

Use the hybrid-specific measurements.

For the 2026 hybrid trims, Honda currently lists 36.3 cu ft behind the second row and up to 71.8 cu ft behind the first row. Do not copy the 39.3 / 76.5 cu ft turbo-trim values into the hybrid guide.

VOLUME ≠ FIT GUARANTEE

Cubic feet does not prove a specific object will fit.

Opening shape, floor height, seat position and object dimensions still matter. A cargo-volume figure is useful evidence, not a promise that a bicycle, stroller or particular box will fit without checking real dimensions.

TRIM EQUIPMENT

Convenience features belong to the trim row too.

Power tailgate, hands-free access, wheel size, interior trim and Google built-in availability vary across the hybrid range. A fair comparison should keep those items separate from fuel-economy conclusions.

RESEARCH CHECKLIST

Twelve questions before a CR-V Hybrid comparison is trustworthy.

  1. Is the vehicle a hybrid trim or one of the 1.5-liter turbo CR-V trims?
  2. Which exact hybrid trim is being discussed?
  3. Is that configuration 2WD or Real Time AWD?
  4. Does the EPA rating belong to that same drivetrain?
  5. Are city, highway and combined figures labeled separately?
  6. Has TrailSport's 38/33/35 result been kept separate from the other AWD hybrids?
  7. Are all-terrain tires and TrailSport equipment kept trim-specific?
  8. Is AWD described as Honda's traction system rather than a fixed locking 4WD claim?
  9. Is the trim MSRP separated from destination, fees, incentives and dealer transaction pricing?
  10. Are hybrid cargo measurements used instead of the larger turbo-trim figures?
  11. Are EPA ratings treated as standardized comparison values rather than guaranteed personal mileage?
  12. Does the conclusion explain trade-offs instead of declaring a “best hybrid SUV” winner?

EDITORIAL BOUNDARY

Configuration evidence is more useful than a winner badge.

A Sport Hybrid 2WD buyer, a TrailSport Hybrid driver and a Sport Touring Hybrid owner are not researching the same drivetrain/efficiency row even though all three vehicles say CR-V Hybrid.

NO “BEST SUV” CLAIM

Lohabook does not turn the highest MPG into a ranking.

The 43/36/40 2WD result can be useful without proving that configuration is best for every buyer. AWD, tires, equipment, weather, roads, price and intended use all change the decision.

NO ECOMMERCE

No cart, checkout or dealer lead-generation flow.

This page is a research reference. It does not collect purchase leads, route users into a Lohabook checkout, or treat manufacturer MSRP as an order button.

USA DEFAULT

Use each market's own official evidence.

The prices and specifications here are U.S.-market evidence reviewed on August 26, 2026. A Canada, India, UK or other regional page should use the official local Honda configuration instead of currency-converting the U.S. MSRP.

SOURCES & PROVENANCE
