HOME-THEATER SOUNDBAR RESEARCH GUIDE

Keep formats, connections, room processing and optional speakers attached to their real dependencies.

A premium soundbar can advertise Dolby Atmos, HDMI eARC, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, room tuning, voice control and a large virtual channel count at the same time. Those claims do not all describe the same layer of the system. This guide uses Sonos Arc Ultra as a worked example for reading the evidence without turning a specification sheet into a ranking.

01 · PHYSICAL BASIS

The soundbar itself is one product; the room and system around it are another.

Start with the device that is actually included before reading bundle photography or surround-system marketing.

DIMENSIONS

46.38 × 2.95 × 4.35 inches.

Sonos lists Arc Ultra at 46.38 inches wide, 2.95 inches high and 4.35 inches deep. That matters for television-stand clearance, wall placement and whether the soundbar blocks the lower edge or infrared receiver of a particular TV.

WEIGHT

13.01 pounds.

The listed weight is 13.01 lb / 5.9 kg. Wall mounting therefore needs the correct Sonos-compatible mount or another mounting solution that is explicitly rated and installed for the wall and load; a product photograph is not installation guidance.

BOX CONTENTS

Soundbar, power cable and HDMI cable are the core package.

Sonos lists Arc Ultra, a power cable, an HDMI cable and documentation. A Sub, Era rear speakers, Sonos Ace headphones and the optical adapter are separate products unless a specific bundle says otherwise.

ROOM

A larger TV recommendation is not a guaranteed room-size match.

Sonos positions Arc Ultra for larger televisions, but room volume, seating distance, reflections, open-plan spaces and listener preference all affect whether the system feels appropriately scaled. Lohabook does not turn a marketing size suggestion into a universal room guarantee.

02 · DRIVER ARCHITECTURE

Driver count and rendered channel count answer different questions.

One describes the hardware inside the cabinet. The other describes how the system presents spatial audio.

PHYSICAL HARDWARE

Sonos documents fifteen Class-D amplifiers and multiple driver types.

The current Arc Ultra specification lists fifteen Class-D digital amplifiers, nine tweeters, six midwoofers and a Sound Motion four-motor dual-membrane woofer. Those are physical components inside a single soundbar enclosure.

Sonos also markets Arc Ultra as creating a 9.1.4 spatial-audio experience. That does not mean the box contains fourteen physically separate room speakers positioned around the listener. Channel-format labels, psychoacoustic processing, upward-firing drivers and actual speaker locations must stay distinct when comparing a soundbar with a traditional multichannel system.

Physical layer
Amplifiers, tweeters, midwoofers, woofer and microphone array inside the soundbar.
Rendered layer
Spatial presentation described by Sonos as a 9.1.4 experience.
Room layer
Ceiling height, wall reflections, seating position and optional surrounds change the result.
Comparison rule
Do not compare “14 channels” with “14 speakers” as though they were the same measurement.

03 · HDMI & FORMATS

Dolby Atmos support starts with the complete source-to-TV-to-soundbar path.

A logo on the soundbar does not prove that a streaming device, game console, television and HDMI connection will deliver the same format.

HDMI eARC / ARC

Arc Ultra connects to the TV through HDMI eARC or ARC.

Sonos includes an HDMI cable and instructs users to connect the soundbar to the television's HDMI eARC/ARC port. The television therefore participates in the format path; the soundbar is not a standalone HDMI switch for every source device.

LOSSLESS / MULTICHANNEL

Some home-theater formats require eARC.

Sonos lists Stereo PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos variants, Dolby TrueHD, multichannel PCM and DTS Digital Surround, while marking lossless/high-bandwidth formats with eARC requirements. A television with ordinary ARC should not be assumed to pass every eARC-format option.

CONTENT

Dolby Atmos Music and Atmos home theater require compatible content.

Spatial processing cannot create an original object-based master that was never delivered by the service or source. App support, account tier, device settings and the TV's audio-output configuration can all change what reaches the soundbar.

04 · OPTIONAL SURROUND SYSTEM

The standalone price does not buy the system shown in every lifestyle image.

Research should separate the soundbar from the accessories used to extend the system.

SUBWOOFER

A Sonos Sub is an optional add-on.

Sonos promotes Arc Ultra with compatible Sub products for deeper low-frequency output. That changes cost, placement, power requirements and acoustic behavior. It is not included in the standalone Arc Ultra basis.

REAR SPEAKERS

Era rear speakers are a separate surround expansion.

Adding rear speakers changes the physical surround field and total system cost. A review or photo of a full Sonos room should not be treated as evidence for what the single soundbar delivers by itself.

HEADPHONES

TV Audio Swap to Sonos Ace is another ecosystem feature.

Sonos supports moving TV audio from Arc Ultra to compatible Sonos Ace headphones. That feature depends on other hardware and software; the headphones are not part of the soundbar box.

OPTICAL

The optical adapter is sold separately.

Sonos documents an optical audio adapter as an optional accessory. Do not describe Arc Ultra as having a built-in optical port simply because an adapter path exists.

05 · ROOM TUNING & DIALOGUE

Software can adapt the system, but it does not erase the room.

Room-processing features should be compared as configurable tools rather than guaranteed acoustic outcomes.

TRUEPLAY

Trueplay measures the room and adjusts the system's EQ.

Sonos says Arc Ultra Trueplay works with compatible iOS and Android devices. That is useful because placement and room reflections matter, but a tuning pass does not make two very different rooms acoustically identical. Furniture, ceiling height, open doorways, seating location and later placement changes can still affect results.

Speech Enhancement is similarly a software feature, with several selectable levels. It is designed to make dialogue easier to hear within the media mix. Lohabook does not infer that it treats hearing loss, replaces hearing devices or guarantees intelligibility for every listener and every source.

Trueplay
Room-measurement and EQ adjustment through the Sonos app.
Speech Enhancement
Configurable dialogue emphasis, not a medical hearing feature.
Night Sound
Reduces loud-sound intensity and raises quieter material for lower-impact listening.
Research rule
Compare availability and controls separately from claims about subjective sound quality.

06 · NETWORK & STREAMING

Wi‑Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 and AirPlay 2 describe different connection paths.

Version numbers are not interchangeable with codec, latency or internet-throughput guarantees.

WI‑FI

Compatible with Wi‑Fi 6 and common 2.4/5 GHz router modes.

Sonos lists compatibility with 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax routers on 2.4 and 5 GHz. That does not mean Arc Ultra receives a fixed Wi‑Fi 6 throughput, nor does it make an unreliable home network irrelevant.

BLUETOOTH

Bluetooth 5.3 supports direct audio streaming.

The version number does not by itself define the codec, latency or television-audio behavior for a particular device. TV home-theater audio remains a separate HDMI path.

AIRPLAY 2

Apple AirPlay 2 is a Wi‑Fi streaming path.

Sonos lists AirPlay 2 on compatible Apple devices. It should not be mixed with Bluetooth as though the two transports have identical requirements or behavior.

APP

The current Sonos app is part of setup and control.

Sonos lists internet access, Wi‑Fi and the current Sonos app on a compatible device as requirements. A soundbar comparison should include software ecosystem dependencies, not only physical ports.

07 · VOICE & MICROPHONES

Voice capability introduces both convenience and privacy choices.

The product includes microphones, but the control state and service availability still matter.

MIC ARRAY

Far-field microphones support voice control and tuning.

Sonos says the microphone array uses beamforming and echo cancellation for voice control and Trueplay functions. That is a hardware capability, not a universal privacy or security guarantee.

MIC SWITCH

A rear hardware switch can disconnect microphone power.

This is useful control evidence. Users who do not want microphones active should still verify the current product state and service configuration rather than assuming a default from a marketing screenshot.

VOICE SERVICES

Sonos Voice Control and Alexa availability varies.

Service support depends on country, language, accounts and current service availability. Do not generalize one region's voice feature list to every buyer.

08 · CURRENT U.S. PRICE BASIS

Keep the standalone new-product price separate from refurbished units and bundles.

Price research fails quickly when a bundle or sale image silently becomes the base-product price.

SONOS DIRECT · AUGUST 25, 2026

$1,099 for the standalone new Arc Ultra.

Sonos currently displays Arc Ultra at $1,099 on the U.S. product page. That is the clean worked price basis for this guide. Sonos also lists refurbished Arc Ultra units and multi-product sets at different prices; those are separate commercial configurations and should not replace the standalone new-product basis.

Taxes, financing, temporary promotions, retailer discounts, bundles and trade-in-style offers should remain outside a clean direct-price comparison unless they are explicitly being researched as separate commercial evidence.

Current new-product basis

Refurbished
Separate certified-refurbished inventory and pricing.
Bundles
Sub/rear/headphone sets are distinct multi-product configurations.
Positioning
Reference evidence only; not a buy recommendation or “best soundbar” ranking.

DECISION FRAMEWORK

Research the signal path and the room before comparing the badge.

For a real purchase decision, start with the television and room you already have, not the most dramatic Atmos illustration.

TV PATH

Verify eARC/ARC and actual audio pass-through.

Check the exact TV model, connected sources and audio-output options. A source device can support a format that the TV does not pass in the same way. If lossless Dolby TrueHD or multichannel PCM matters, confirm the complete eARC path rather than assuming the soundbar logo solves it.

ROOM

Plan placement before adding optional speakers.

Measure the stand or wall area, check TV clearance, power access, seating and where optional Sub/rear speakers could actually live. A surround expansion is useful only if the room can support the extra hardware without creating unsafe cable, mounting or circulation problems.

CONTENT

Compare what you actually watch and listen to.

A household dominated by stereo broadcast audio has different needs from one using Atmos streaming, UHD Blu-ray, game consoles or multichannel PCM. Format support should follow the content path, not the other way around.

SOFTWARE

Include app and ecosystem dependence in the evidence.

Trueplay, Speech Enhancement, system grouping, updates, AirPlay and optional Sonos-to-Sonos features depend on software and compatible devices. If you prefer minimal app dependence, that is a real trade-off even when the hardware specification is strong.

RESEARCH CHECKLIST

A useful soundbar comparison can answer these questions without a ranking.

If the evidence cannot answer them, keep the field unknown instead of filling it from a review headline.

FORMAT PATH

Which formats reach the soundbar through my actual TV connection?

Record the source device, television, eARC/ARC path and service/application conditions before comparing format badges.

INCLUDED SYSTEM

What is included at the quoted price?

Separate soundbar-only pricing from Sub, rear-speaker, headphone, optical-adapter, wall-mount and bundle pricing.

ROOM & CONTROL

How much does the system depend on room tuning, app setup and microphones?

Record software, account, network and voice-service dependencies just as carefully as amplifier or driver specifications.
