Choose a heat-pump dryer by the laundry room you actually have.

Heat-pump dryers can remove the exterior vent requirement and use substantially less energy than conventional dryers, but the useful buying questions are more specific: where will condensed water go, how large are your normal loads, what electrical connection is required, how are filters and the condenser maintained, and which official support path will you rely on later?

01 · BOUNDED DECISION AID

Four outcomes cover most real decisions better than a “best dryer” list.

Start with the room and the load. A heat-pump badge should solve a specific installation, energy or fabric-care problem.

PATH A · KEEP VENTED

Your existing vented dryer may still fit the job.

If a safe exterior vent already exists, drying speed is satisfactory, the machine is serviceable, and energy use is not the problem you are trying to solve, replacing working equipment only for a newer technology label may not be justified. Inspect the existing vent path and appliance condition before assuming replacement is the first step.

PATH B · FULL-SIZE HEAT PUMP

Choose this when you want ventless installation without shrinking normal load size.

LG's DLHC5502 series is a worked example of a 27-inch, 7.8-cu-ft ventless heat-pump dryer. ENERGY STAR's certified record identifies the series as a standard-size electric ventless heat-pump dryer. That makes it useful evidence for the category, not proof that it fits every laundry room or every washer load.

PATH C · COMPACT HEAT PUMP

Choose compact when floor width and venting are the hard constraints.

Bosch's WQB245B0UC is a 24-inch compact ventless heat-pump dryer with published dimensions of 33 1/4 × 23 1/2 × 26 inches. A smaller cabinet can solve apartment or stacked-laundry geometry, but compare drum capacity with the washer and the largest loads you actually dry.

PATH D · FIX THE ROOM FIRST

Drainage, electrical supply or clearances can be the real blocker.

Heat-pump dryers are ventless, not installation-free. Condensed water still needs a tank or drain path; the appliance still needs the manufacturer-specified electrical supply, clearances and floor conditions; and maintenance access still matters. Verify the installation manual before ordering.

02 · HOW THE TECHNOLOGY CHANGES THE ROOM

Ventless does not mean moisture disappears.

Heat-pump drying is a closed-loop process: warm air is reused and moisture is condensed rather than exhausted outdoors.

CLOSED LOOP

The useful installation benefit is the missing exterior dryer vent.

ENERGY STAR explains that a heat-pump dryer removes moisture through an evaporator/condenser and reuses much of the heat instead of sending warm humid air outside. That can make a heat-pump model practical where cutting or maintaining an exterior exhaust path is difficult.

The water still has to go somewhere. ENERGY STAR describes three common arrangements: manually emptying a water tank, using a drain hose to a nearby drain, or using a manufacturer-supported connection to the washer drain. The correct path is model-specific, so the installation manual outranks a generic diagram.

03 · ENERGY EVIDENCE

Use certified metrics, not an invented utility bill.

Energy savings depend on usage, electricity rates, washer extraction, cycle selection, climate and the specific dryer. Lohabook does not turn a national efficiency statement into a household-cost guarantee.

CATEGORY CONTEXT

Heat-pump dryers use substantially less energy than conventional dryers.

ENERGY STAR's current heat-pump guidance says certified heat-pump models can reduce energy use by at least 28% compared with standard dryers, while its broader clothes-dryer guidance describes much larger category-level savings for heat-pump technology. Those pages use different comparison contexts, so keep the source and wording attached rather than collapsing them into one universal percentage.

CERTIFIED RECORD

The LG DLHC5502* record exposes machine-specific test fields.

ENERGY STAR lists the DLHC5502* family with a Combined Energy Factor of 9.0 and estimated annual energy use of 266 kWh/year under the program's standardized test framework. Those values are comparison evidence, not a prediction of your actual annual consumption.

UPSTREAM FACTOR

The washer changes the dryer workload.

ENERGY STAR notes that a front-load washer with strong final-spin extraction leaves less water for the dryer to remove. Compare the laundry pair as a system: a dryer cannot recover time or energy already lost because the washer leaves an unusually wet load.

04 · CAPACITY + CYCLE TIME

Drum size and standardized cycle time belong on the same worksheet.

A smaller heat-pump dryer can be ideal for a compact home but frustrating if the washer routinely produces loads that do not tumble freely.

FULL SIZE

LG DLHC5502*: 7.8 cu ft.

ENERGY STAR lists the family as a standard-size model and LG publishes a 27-inch-wide, 7.8-cu-ft design. That evidence helps pair the dryer with common full-size washers. It does not prove that every bulky comforter or mixed load is appropriate; use the owner manual for load guidance.

COMPACT

Bosch WQB245B0UC: 24-inch cabinet.

Bosch publishes a 23 1/2-inch width and 26-inch depth for this compact model. The smaller footprint can be the decisive feature in a closet or stacked arrangement, but the correct comparison is cabinet geometry plus actual load pattern, not “compact versus full-size” as a quality score.

TEST TIME

Standardized cycle time is context, not a stopwatch promise.

ENERGY STAR's DLHC5502* record reports an estimated energy test cycle time of 68 minutes. Household cycle time can vary with load size, fabric mix, initial moisture, selected program, ambient conditions and sensor behavior. Use the certified figure for model comparison, not appointment planning.

LOWER HEAT

Fabric care is part of the technology tradeoff.

ENERGY STAR notes that heat-pump dryers use lower temperatures than standard electric dryers. That can be gentler on clothing, but the appropriate cycle still depends on the garment label and the dryer's manual. A heat-pump design does not make every fabric dryer-safe.

05 · MAINTENANCE + REFRIGERANT

Efficiency depends on airflow and heat-exchange surfaces staying usable.

Ownership research should include cleaning and service instructions before purchase, not after the first warning light.

FILTERS

Lint-filter cleaning remains routine maintenance.

ENERGY STAR recommends regular filter cleaning to preserve airflow and efficiency. Follow the exact manufacturer schedule and cleaning method, especially when a model has multiple filters or warnings tied to airflow.

CONDENSER

“Self-cleaning” is a design feature, not permission to ignore the manual.

LG advertises an Auto Cleaning Condenser on the DLHC5502 series, while Bosch describes a Self-Cleaning Condenser on WQB245B0UC. Those features should be interpreted through each owner's manual: external filters, drain paths and other maintenance points still exist.

REFRIGERANT

Heat-pump dryers contain a refrigerant circuit.

ENERGY STAR recommends considering refrigerant global-warming potential when model data is available. Its DLHC5502* certified record currently identifies R-134a and publishes the associated GWP field. Treat that as environmental product data, not as a do-it-yourself service instruction.

SERVICE BOUNDARY

Refrigerant and internal heat-pump repairs belong with qualified service.

Bosch's manual warns against damaging refrigerant-circuit pipes and directs warranty repair through authorized service. Use official support and model-specific service documentation rather than treating the appliance like a conventional resistance-heater dryer internally.

06 · WARRANTY + SUPPORT INTERPRETATION

Separate permanent limited-warranty terms from temporary promotions.

Manufacturer product pages can show promotional coverage alongside the underlying product warranty. Save the exact support page and read the detailed terms for the model and purchase date.

LG SUPPORT EXAMPLE

DLHC5502V support publishes manuals and model-specific warranty fields.

LG's U.S. support page currently lists an owner's manual and warranty information for DLHC5502V, including one-year labor and one-year parts fields plus longer listed coverage for specific components. The retail product page separately advertises a time-limited promotional two-year coverage path for qualifying 2026 purchases through ThinQ. Those are different evidence objects; do not merge them into one generic “two-year warranty” claim.

BOSCH SUPPORT EXAMPLE

The model page links manuals, warranty and service resources.

Bosch's WQB245B0UC page exposes manuals and documents, while its manual tells owners to use the warranty statement or website for detailed terms and provides the U.S. large-appliance support number. Lohabook links those primary surfaces rather than copying an assumed warranty duration into a permanent buying guide.

SAVE BEFORE BUYING

Keep model, manual and warranty URLs together.

Before purchase, record the exact model suffix, official specification page, installation manual, owner manual and warranty/support page. Hardware revisions, accessories and promotional terms can vary. A clean evidence bundle is more useful later than a screenshot of a retailer card.

07 · RESEARCH CHECKLIST

Make the installation and ownership decision before comparing features.

A good shortlist can be only three to five models once the hard constraints are explicit.

ROOM

Width, depth, door swing, stacking and service clearance.

Measure the usable room, not just the old appliance. Include hoses, drain path, plugs, doors and the space needed to access filters or move the machine for service.

WATER

Choose tank-emptying or a supported drain route.

If you do not want to empty a tank, verify that the model supports a drain hose and that the laundry area has a suitable drain configuration under the installation instructions.

LOAD

Match the washer and your largest routine load.

Record washer capacity and the bulky items you actually dry. The practical requirement is enough tumbling room, not the largest published drum number in isolation.

OWNERSHIP

Open the support page before the product arrives.

Confirm manuals, filter/condenser instructions, warranty terms, official support contact and the model identifier you will need for parts or service. Do not infer local service availability unless the manufacturer locator verifies it for your area.
